Noblesse Failed to Live up to the Expectations, but It Is Still a Fun Watch

The recent Webtoon anime adaptations have been quite successful for Crunchyroll. Tower of God and The God of High School became one of the most popular anime on the planet within a year. So, it does make sense that Crunchyroll is hoping to create shows that perform just as well as the previous two Webtoon anime adaptations. However, the recently released Noblesse seems to have failed to live up to the expectations. MyAnimeList puts the Noblesse at 1454 in popularity while the previous two shows, The God of High School and Tower of God, are ranked 327 and 76, respectively. It proves that although Webtoon anime adaptations are a safe bet, they don’t guarantee success.

There are many reasons that might have led to the disappointing debut of the much-anticipated show, but two of those stand out. The previous two shows that got anime adaptation had stellar animation, but Noblesse is nowhere near as good as them. The other and the most crucial reason is the fact that Episode 1 of the series is the continuation of the 2016 ONA episode named Noblesse: Awakening. So, the viewers who never saw the ONA had no idea what was going on. 

The show fails to impress as it lacks coherence since both the anime and ONA skipped many plot points. Episode 1 and 2 covered chapter 92 to 107 of the comic while the ONA compressed over 90 chapters into a single 31-minute episode. Several characters have been removed, while a few are changed so much that they are technically not even the same character anymore. Today, the expectation is so high from any anime adaptations that such negligence is just unacceptable to the audience. 

Since there have been so many changes, it is no surprise that the debut was so disappointing. Newcomers are confused because the series seemed to have presumed that they would watch the ONA first; this turned out to be a grave mistake for the show, which could have been just as successful and famous as the previous two Webtoon anime adaptations. However, the show still has enough charm to make fans stick around for a few more episodes. 

Noblesse has some great characters who can make the audience laugh. The protagonist of the series is a vampire who has just woken up from sleep after 820 years. He knows nothing about modern society. He is in awe of the progress that human beings have made and loves to eat ramen. Cadis Etrama Di Raizel is therefore quite likable, and his interaction with the modern man is entertaining and hilarious. 

The protagonist is not the only interesting character; his loyal servant and the school principal Frankenstein are just as likable. There are other characters like Regis K Landegre, Seira Loyard, who are intriguing and are given significant character growth throughout the series. Noblesse’s comic was criticized a lot for its repetitive plot structure and battles. It became annoying for the fans overtime who knew where the story was headed. The anime has paid attention to these criticisms and completely removed the battle elements. It has instead focused on the characters who are the most engaging parts of the whole story.

The initial episodes have set the stage for the inevitable battle between the nobles and the Union. Although their motivations are not established as of now but with time, it is expected that both the camps will have a clear incentive to stand up against each other. It is interesting to see a vampire learning to adapt to the modern world and the progress that humanity has made. Noblesse has certainly missed a trick by compressing the comic’s first 100 chapters in just two-three episodes. It would certainly hurt its popularity, but the show still manages to be entertaining and a fun watch. So, despite having some serious issues with its initial episodes, Noblesse still deserves to get some time to prove itself.
